Cross Country Solid at ECAC/IC4A Meets

VAN COURTLANDT PARK, NYC. – The University of Virginia cross country teams competed in the 1998 ECAC/IC4A Championships, and left Van Courtlandt Park with some lofty results. The womens team finished first overall in the 12 team field in the 5,000 meter run with 63 points. The mens team finished in a fourth place tie with Mt. St. Marys in the 8,000 meter event with 137 points.

Jamie Sutherland highlighted the womens team for UVa, as she finished first for Virginia and second overall in the meet with a time of 17:45.00. She was followed by Jennifer Owens who finished eighth overall (8:10.30), Astrid Gotthardt who placed 15th overall (18:19.70) and Dana Coons who came in 16th place overall with a time of 18:23.20. Frances Warner finished 22nd at 18:38.10, Cheryl Twomey took 26th at 18:50.10 and Jessica Thomas recorded a 30th place finish with a time of 18:55.00 to give Virginia seven runners in the top 30 spots. Ariana Kelly of Yale took first place overall with a time of 17:41.50.

The men’s team was led by Bob Thiele, who finished fourth overall with a time of 24:36.80. Thieles finish was one minute faster than his mark in the IC4A Meet last year. Damond Cromer posted a 22nd place finished with a time of 25:26, Rick Davis took 31st at 25:34 and Thomas Del Sordo captured 33rd with a mark of 25:38. Del Sordo recorded the top freshman finish of the meet. Matt Illian claimed 47th at 25:53.50, and teammates Raymond Weeden (26:13) and Bill Palmer (26:34) rounded out UVas performances. All-American runner Matt Lane of William & Mary took first place overall with a mark of 24:06.

Virginia will return to action on Monday, (Nov. 2) when the Cavaliers compete in the 1998 ACC Championships. The meet will be hosted by the University of Virginia and will take place at Darden Towe Park in Charlottesville, Va. The womens 5,000 meter event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the mens 8,000 meter run to follow at 10:45 a.m.
