Doak Finch Wins 400 Individual Medley

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of North Carolina, bidding to win its sixth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference men’s swimming and diving championship, held onto first place following the second day of action. The Tar Heels have 508.5 points through 13 of 20 events, giving them a 63.5 point lead over second-place Virginia (445 points) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Florida State stands in third place with 365 points, followed by North Carolina State with 313 points. Maryland (250), Clemson (117.5), Georgia Tech (117.5) and Duke (99) round out the scoring.

North Carolina won three of the seven events contested on the day. The Tar Heels’ Tucker Shade took first in the 100-yard butterfly for the third consecutive season, winning the event in a conference-record time of 47.09. Ted Brisson also set an ACC record, as he won the 100-yard backstroke for the second time in his career with a time of 48.10. The Tar Heels’ other individual event champion was Eric Fehr, who won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.69.

Virginia won only one event on the day, with Doak Finch taking first in the 400-yard individual medley. Finch, who also won the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday evening, swam a time of 3:51.27 to win the 400 I.M. The Cavaliers also had a victory in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Shamek Pietucha, Michael Renshaw, Austin Ramirez and Finch swam a time of 6:34.32 to snap North Carolina’s string of eight consecutive victories in the event.

Although the Cavaliers did not win any other events, they had three second place finishes on the day to remain second in the overall standings. Pietucha came in second in the 100-yard butterfly (47.78), Ramirez placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.95) and Jason Webb was second in the 100-yard backstroke (48.52).

Florida State had a pair of event champions on the day, but was unable to improve on its third place showing. The Seminoles swept the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, as Brendon Dedekind captured the title in the event for the second year in a row with a time of 54.48 and Brett Petersen finished second in a time of 54.77. Florida State also won the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Stephen Parry, Petersen, Keam Ang and Dedekind swam an ACC-meet record time of 1:28.61.

The ACC Championship concludes tomorrow with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m., followed by finals at 7:00 p.m.
