Football Receives Preseason National Ranking

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Three publications have included the University of Virginia football team in their 1998 preseason rankings. The Cavaliers are ranked 12th by Athlon, 14th by Lindy’s and 15th by The Sporting News.
Virginia safety Anthony Poindexter is a first-team preseason All-America selection by Bob Griese’s College Football Yearbook and The Sporting News, and a second-team preseason All-America selection by Athlon and Football News. UVa defensive tackle Antonio Dingle is a third-team preseason All-America selection by Athlon.
Poindexter is listed as the top safety in the nation by The Sporting News and the third-best safety in the nation by Lindy’s. Dingle is listed as the fourth-best defensive tackle in the nation by The Sporting News and is ranked fifth by Lindy’s. Virginia’s Anthony Southern is ranked the fourth-best fullback in the nation by Lindy’s, Casey Crawford is listed as the fifth best tight end by Lindy’s and Aaron Brooks is ranked the seventh-best all-purpose quarterback by The Sporting News.
Virginia finished the 1997 season with an overall record of 7-4 and compiled a 5-3 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers have won at least seven games each of the last 11 seasons.
