Golf Team Takes Fifth at ACC's

NEW LONDON, N.C.–The University of Virginia golf team finished fifth at the ACC Men’s Golf Championships at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers shot an 8-under par 856 for the 54-hole tournament in one of their best performances of the spring.
Clemson claimed its second consecutive title following a 28-under par 836 performance. The Tigers finished seven strokes ahead of Georgia Tech. All five Tiger golfers shot at or below par in the final round, which helped push Clemson past N.C. State for its fifth conference crown. With an 11-under par 277 in the final round, Clemson finished with an ACC Championships 54-hole score.
Georgia Tech shot the lowest team round of the tournament in the final round to surge past N.C. State for second place.
Clemson’s Charles Warren shot a 69 in the final round to successfully defend his individual title and become only the third individual to win back-to-back championships, joining Wake Forest’s Ronny Thomas (1959-60) and Scott Hoch (1977-78).
North Carolina’s Don Hill fired a 4-under par 68 in the final round to finish in second place with a 10-under 206. Georgia Tech’s Matt Kuchar, the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion and the low amateur at last week’s Masters, carded a 6-under 66 to jump from 13th place to finish in third place with a 9-under 207.
Cavalier sophomore James Driscoll recorded his fourth top-10 finish in six spring starts b(c)y finished in a tie for eighth at 210 (71-69-70). Freshman Cameron Yancey continued his steady spring by tying for 15th with a 2-under par 214 (72-72-70). Lewis Chitengwa tied for 23rd with a 217 (75-70-72). Mike Mitchell finished tied for 35th at 222 (71-77-74) and Andrea Brotto tied for 37th at 223 (79-76-68). Both Mitchell and Brotto turned in their best finish of the spring.
