CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Walt Fuller, an assistant basketball coach at the College of William and Mary for the last four years, has been named an assistant basketball coach in the University of Virginia men’s basketball program.

“Walt Fuller is a tremendous addition to our University of Virginia staff,” said Virginia head coach Pete Gillen. “He is a very hard worker who can help us improve our basketball program in many areas.

“He has done a great job at Drexel University and at the College of William and Mary. His four years at William and Mary provide him with knowledge of the state of Virginia that should be a plus for our program.”

The appointment of Fuller completes Gillen’s Virginia staff. In addition to Fuller, the staff includes assistant coaches Bobby Gonzalez and Michael Malone, and administrative assistant Tom Herrion. Gonzalez, Malone and Herrion all came to Virginia with Gillen from Providence College.

“Coach Gillen is a great coach and a proven winner, and Virginia is an institution with a great reputation and basketball tradition,” Fuller said. “It’s going to be an honor to work beside someone of Coach GIllen’s caliber. I know I’ll learn a lot from him.”

Prior to joining the staff at William and Mary, Fuller was an assistant coach at Drexel University for six years. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., he worked as a marketing representative for the Philadelphia 76ers for one year.

A 1987 graduate of Drexel, Fuller was a two-time captain of the Dragons’ basketball team. He finished his collegiate career ranked first on Drexel’s list for games played (116) and was second on the school’s career free throw percentage list (80.5 percent). He was the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 1985-86 season and received the award as the team’s top defensive player.

He is married to the former Martina Colbert of Philadelphia.

Gonzalez comes to Virginia after four years as an assistant coach at Providence. Prior to joining the staff at Providence, he was an assistant coach for one year at Xavier University. He was an assistant coach in New York City at Rice High School from 1991-93 and at St. Nicholas of Tolentine from 1988-91.

Gonzalez is a native of Binghamton, N.Y., and is a 1986 graduate of Buffalo State. He was the captain of the Buffalo State basketball team as a senior.

Malone was an assistant coach at Providence College for two years and an administrative assistant to Gillen for one year before coming to Virginia. Prior to joining the basketball staff at Providence, he was an assistant coach at Oakland University (Mich.). He also was an assistant at Friends Academy in Baltimore, Md., for one year.

Malone is a 1994 graduate of Loyola College (Md.) where he played basketball as an undergraduate.

Herrion comes to Virginia after four years as an assistant coach at Providence. Prior to joining the staff at Providence, he was an assistant coach at Merrimack College for five years.

Herrion, a native of Oxford, Mass., is a 1989 graduate of Merrimack. As an undergraduate at Merrimack, he was an assistant coach at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge, Mass., and head junior varsity coach for two years (1987-89). He was a a student assistant coach at Merrimack during the 1986-87 season.
