CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia golf team has been selected to play in the NCAA East Regional golf tournament at the Melrose Golf Course at Daufuskie Island; Hilton Head, S.C., on May 14-16.

Twenty-three teams and five individuals will play in the East Regional tournament with 11 teams and two individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Championship will be conducted May 27-30 at the New Mexico Championships Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

This marks the eighth time in the last nine years that the Cavaliers have been invited to the East Regional tournament. Virginia finished eighth in last season’s NCAA East Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where the Cavaliers finished tied for 23rd.

Seven schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference and five from the Southeastern Conference received bids.

The field for the 1998 NCAA East Regional is below.

District 1: Central Connecticut, Connecticut, Rhode Island

District 2: James Madison, Navy, Penn State, Seton Hall

District 3 North: Augusta, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia, Wake Forest

District 3 South: Alabama-Birmingham, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Louisiana State, South Carolina, Southeastern Louisiana

Individual Qualifiers: Michael Connell, Mississippi State; Donny Lee, Virginia Commonwealth; Georges Plumet, Campbell; V.J. Trolio, Southern Mississippi; Chad Wellhausen, Mississippi State
