DALTON, Ga.–The University of Virginia golf team finished 16th in an 18-team field at the Carpet Capital Classic tournament at The Farm in Dalton, Ga. The Cavaliers fell behind early and were never able to regroup, finishing with a 54-hole total of 914.

Clemson shot a 9-under par 855 to defeat host Georgia Tech by 10 strokes for the title. The Tigers were the only team to break par for the tournament.

Clemson’s Lucas Glover and Georgia Tech’s Bryce Molder tied for the individual championship with a 4-under par 212. Glover entered today’s final round with a one-stroke lead over Alberto Ochoa of TCU, but ended up having to hold off Molder for the tie. Molder shot his second consecutive 69 in today’s round, while Glover fired an even-par 72. Ochoa finished third, one stroke back.

Lewis Chitengwa was Virginia’s best finisher. He finished in a tie for 23rd place with a 5-over par 221. He struggled in the first round with a 77, but came back to shoot even par 72s in the last two rounds. James Driscoll had his string of top-10 finishes snapped at three by finishing in a tie for 53rd place with a 228.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend (April 10-11) at the BELLSOUTH Yellow Pages Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C.
