CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The seventh-ranked Cavaliers used a 3-0 advantage in the fourth quarter to take the lead over Duke 12-11, but Chris Sanderson’s save of Scott Diggs with 27 seconds remaining sealed the win for Virginia in ACC men’s lacrosse action today in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers led 9-6 at halftime, but the Blue Devils outscored Virginia 5-0 in the third quarter to take an 11-9 lead going into the final stanza. The Cavaliers returned the shut out, thanks to Sanderson’s five saves in the fourth, which gave him 13 for the day.
The Cavaliers went up early with a goal in the first quarter, but Duke scored a pair to gain the lead. The Cavaliers answered with a pair of their own to go up 3-2. The teams traded goals for the first quarter, whdich ended in a tie at 5-5. Duke took the early lead in the second quarter, but Virginia went on a 4-0 run in the last six minutes of the half to take the halftime lead 9-6.
Duke came out strong in the second half and scored two goals in the first two minutes to cut the deficit to 9-8. The Blue Devils tied it up six minutes into the third quarter and then scored twice in the final four minutes of the stanza to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth.
Virginia will host the 1998 ACC Tournament Friday and Sunday, Apr. 17-19. The Cavaliers, the second seed, will face Duke, the third seed, on Friday at 8:30 pm.
