CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– Devin Darcangelo scored his fourth goal of the game 1:35 into overtime to give second-ranked Syracuse an 18-17 come-from-behind victory over third-ranked Virginia Saturday in men’s lacrosse.

Although the game was the season-opener for both teams, it was as hard-fought as an NCAA tournament contest. The score was tied eight times, and the teams were whistled for 19 penalties

Virginia had two shots in overtime before Darcangelo’s game-winning score, which was assisted by attackman Ryan Powell. The second Cavalier shot, by attackman Jay Jalbert, escaped goalie Jason Gebhart but hit the post.

The Orangemen also tied the score on late-game heroics. David Wren put Virginia ahead with just 42 seconds remaining in regulation, cranking a 12-yard shot past Gebhart in an extra-man situation.

Syracuse won the faceoff following that score, and Casey Powell, who had five goals and four assists for the Orange, found Matt Cutia on the fast break. Cutia whirled and scored from five yards out with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Cavaliers held their biggest lead at 15-11 with 12:34 left in the game when Drew Melchionni scored on a pass from Tucker Radebaugh. Melchionni and Radebaugh each recorded career highs in the game, Melchionni with four goals and Radebaugh with three goals and four assists.

Twice player-of-the-year Casey Powell, however, scored three of Syracuse’s next four goals to cut Virginia’s lead to 16-15 with 2:58 remaining.

UVa’s next game is March, against Mercyhurst. Syracuse plays Yale March 9.
