AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore Austin Ramirez, (Brookfield, Wis.) placed seventh in the 500 yard freestyle to lead the University of Virginia men’s swimming team into 22nd place following the first day of the NCAA Championship. The Cavaliers totaled 12 points on the opening day of competition. Stanford stands in first place with 183 points.

Ramirez placed seventh in the 500 free finals with his time of 4:21.67, earning first team All-America honors in the process. He swam the fastest time of his collegiate career during the preliminary round, when he finished with a time of 4:20.25. Two other Cavaliers took part in the day’s events, both competing in the 200 yard individual medley. Sophomore Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C.) finished 17th with a time of 1:48.57, while senior Jason Webb (Philadelphia, Pa.) came in 22nd in a time of 1:49.04

The NCAA Championship continues tomorrow and Saturday, with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. each day.
