AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C.) placed eighth in the 400 yard individual medley to lead the University of Virginia men’s swimming team into 21st place following the second day of the NCAA Championship. The Cavaliers have totaled 34 points through the first two days of competition. Stanford stands in first place with 385 points.

Finch placed eighth in the 400 I.M. finals with his time of 3:56.66, earning first team All-America honors in the process. In addition to Finch, junior Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton, Alberta) was a consolation finalist in two events. Pietucha came in ninth in the 100 yard butterfly in a school-record time of 47.29, while placing 15th in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 48.38. Pietucha also broke the school record in the 100 back with his time of 48.11 in the preliminary round. The Cavaliers’ only other competitor on the day, senior Jason Webb (Philadelphia, Pa.), came in 26th in the 100 back with a time of 49.13

The NCAA Championship concludes tomorrow, with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m.
