CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The University of Virginia men’s tennis team won its third match in a row by defeating N.C. State 6-1 this evening at the indoor courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers, who defeated Maryland 7-0 yesterday, improved to 12-5 overall this season (3-2 in the ACC). The Wolfpack saw their two-match winning streak end as they fell to 9-8 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.

The visiting Wolfpack got off to a good start and took the early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Virginia got its lone doubles win from the freshman tandem of Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery. They defeated Jeff Smith and Keith Salmon 8-3 for their fifth conference win in a row.

The Cavaliers turned things around quickly in singles by gaining straight set wins at all six positions. Vahaly gained a big victory at #1 by defeating Roberto Bracone 6-4, 6-1. Vahaly’s win over the #56 Bracone was Vahaly’s fourth consecutive win over a ranked opponent.

Hyon Yoo won his seventh match in a row over Jeff Smith 6-1, 6-0 at #4, while John Winter’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Shaun Thomas at #5 was his fourth in a row.

Bear Schofield returned to the line-up yesterday against Maryland after missing almost three weeks of singles action due to an injury. His return featured a 6-4, 7-5 win over Keith Salmon at #3.

The Cavaliers return to action at home next weekend. The host Duke on Saturday (April 11) and Florida State on Sunday (April 12). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 PM at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
