ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team avenged a regular season loss today by defeating Wake Forest 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis tournament at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Georgia Tech campus.

The Cavaliers lost to the Demon Deacons 5-2 a month ago, but got the win today when it mattered. Virginia improves to 15-6 overall this spring, while Wake Forest falls to 14-11.

This marks the third consecutive year the Cavaliers have advanced to the semifinals. Virginia, the tournament’s third seed, advances to play the winner of the North Carolina/Clemson match Saturday at 11 AM.

Wake Forest grabbed the early lead by winning the doubles point to begin the match. The Demon Deacons clinched the point as Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz ended a five-match winning strehak by Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly by winning 8-6 at 1.

John Winter got Virginia on the board by winning at 5 over Lars Kabiersch, but Wake Forest’s Jimmy Chou added to the Deacs’ score with a win over Tommy Croker at 6.

Montgomery downed Wake’s Billy Gluck 6-2, 7-5 at 2 for his sixth win in a row to tie the score at two. Vahaly, playing in his hometown, rallied to defeat Myles Clouston 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at 1 for his 18th win of the season.

Hyon Yoo, the ACC champion at 4, sealed the win for the Cavaliers with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 win over Johan Hansen at 4. The win is Yoo’s 11th consecutive victory.
