NORCROSS, Ga. – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost to Duke 4-0in the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships today atthe Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga. The loss drops Virginia’srecord to 14-9 overall, while the third-ranked Blue Devils improve to 22-4this season.

Duke jumped to the early lead by capturing the doubles point. TheCavaliers’ tandem of Tommy Croker and John Winter, the ACC champion at #2doubles, defeated the nation’s 44th-ranked team of Doug Root and PedroEscudero 8-3 for the Cavaliers lone triumph. The Blue Devils captured thepoint with wins at #1 and #3.

Duke then extended its winning streak over Virginia to 20 matches in a rowby winning at #3, #4, and #5 singles to close out the match. The Blue Devilline-up features four nationally ranked players and Virginia was not ableto overcome Duke’s powerful singles players.

Ramsey Smith dealt Hyon Yoo just his ninth loss of the year with a 6-0, 6-2win at #4, while Pedro Escudero defeated John Winter for the second time ina week with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #3. Duke clinched the match with AndresPedroso’s 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Tommy Croker at #5.

The Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals following at 4-0 win over WakeForest on Friday.

The Blue Devils face Georgia Tech in the championship match Sunday at noon.Duke has won the ACC title five of the last six years.
