RALEIGH, N.C. – Ron Kelley scored 20 points and Damon Thornton added 10points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots to lead NorthCarolina State to a 82-72 victory over Virginia on Thursday night.

Tim Wells scored 18 points and Ron Anderson added 13 as the Wolfpack (11-5,2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) recorded its second straight win over Virginiafor the first time since the 1987-88 season.

Chris Williams was 11-of-15 from the field and had 27 points to leadVirginia (9-8, 0-5), which is off to its worst conference start since 1984-85,when they lost their first six ACC contests.

The Wolfpack trailed by two points at halftime but started the second halfwith a 14-4 run. N.C. State led 57-51 on Thornton’s tip-in with 10:07 left andheld Virginia without a field goal over the next four minutes to extend thelead to nine.

Kris Hunter, Virginia’s tallest player at 6-foot-11, fouled out with 9:26left, slapping Kelley on the arm inside. Kelley hit the shot and converted thefree throw to put the Wolfpack up 60-51.

The Cavaliers got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Virginia led 35-33 at halftime after shooting 65 percent (13-of-20) in thefirst half.

Virginia went on a 10-2 spurt after the Wolfpack opened a 25-19 lead on RonAnderson’s free throws with 4:42 left.

Kelley split two free throws two minutes later but Willie Dersch made a16-foot jumper from the right wing and Chezley Watson scored on a layup with1:37 left to match Virginia’s largest lead of the half, 33-28.

Williams was 7-of-7 from the field in the first half, including two3-pointers.
