N.C. State Nips Cavaliers 19-18 in Wrestling

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – N.C. State’s Zach Breitenbach notched a major decision at 184 to help the Wolfpack come from behind to defeat the Cavaliers 19-18 today in ACC wrestling action. After Virginia’s John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) defeated John Carreon 6-1 at 149, the Cavaliers held a 15-6 lead, but the ‘Pack won three of the last four matches to nip Virginia 19-18.
Virginia jumped out to the early lead as Craig Fenstermaker (Hilton Head, S.C./Northampton (Pa.)) pinned Josh McClure 3:24 into the 197 bout in the opening match. The Wolfpack cut the deficit in half as Billy Noble defeated Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) 3-2 at heavyweight. The Cavaliers moved back on top by six as Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) decisioned Lee Carroll 2-0 at 125. N. C. State answered as Greg Bauer defeated Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) 4-3 at 133.
P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) upset 15th-ranked Tommy Davis 2-1 in double overtime to give Virginia a 12-6 cushion, and Pozniak’s win at 149 extended the lead to 15-6.
But N. C. State’s Pierre Pryor pinned Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) with three seconds to go in the first period, bringing the Wolfpack within three. Cavalier Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) gave Virginia a six-point lead at 18-12 with an 8-3 decision over Kyle Guffey at 165, but Kevin Boross defeated Virginia’s John Qualter (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) 11-5 at 174 to bring the Pack within three.
At 184, Breitenbach defeated Jason Leneau (Baltimore, Md./Boy’s Latin) 13-4 in a major decision to push the Wolfpack past the Cavaliers 19-18.
Virginia will take a break from dual match action as they travel to Washington DC to compete in the Congressional Cup on Saturday, Feb. 6.
