Softball Drops Two Games in UCSB Easton Invite

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Virginia softball team began competition in the 1999 UCSB Easton Invitational Tournament. The tournament is being hosted by the University of California at Santa Barbara and is being held at the UCSB Campus Diamond.
UVA opened play in the tournament by facing the Texas A&M Aggies. For the first time all season, the Cavaliers opponent scored in the first inning as Texas A&M took an early 1-0 lead. Virginia responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first inning to knot the score at 1-1. However, the Aggies scored two runs in the third inning and three more runs in the fourth to pull out to a 6-1 lead. UVA narrowed the gap by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 6-3 before Texas A&M scored three runs in the seventh inning to gather a 9-3 victory.
The Cavaliers gathered six hits in the game and were paced by Lori Reese who finished 2-4 at the plate. Reese hit a double and gathered an RBI. Karen Breshears (2 RBI, double), Mariruth Graham (run) and Chrissy Quinn each finished 1-3. Jen Krill (1-2) and Meaghan Young each score a run for UVA in the loss. Quinn pitched three innings for Virginia and gave up seven hits, six runs, walked three batters while striking out three Aggies. She was replaced by Stacey Zagol who pitched four innings. Zagol allowed five hits, three runs, walked two batters while striking out one A&M batter.
The Cavaliers found themselves down once again to UC-Santa Barbara in the second game on the afternoon, as the Gauchos took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Virginia posted its first lead of the tournament after scoring two runs in the second inning, and extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning before UCSB scored six unanswered runs to regain the lead at 7-3. UVA added a run in the seventh inning, as the Cavaliers fell to the Gauchos by the score of 7-4.
Virginia gathered seven hits in the game, led by Breshears (2-3, RBI, run), who hits UVA’s second homerun of the season, and Young (2-4, triple, two RBI, run). Corinne Good (1-1), Reese (1-3, RBI) and Krill (1-4) posted hits while Julie Amaon and Quinn each scored a run in the loss. Quinn started things off for the Cavaliers on the mound, as she pitched four and one-third innings. She yielded six hits, four runs (three earned), walked four batters and recorded four strikeouts. Zagol replaced Quinn in the fifth inning and gave up four hits, three runs and struck out one UCSB batter.
With the two losses, Virginia’s record falls to 4-5 overall. The Cavaliers have now lost five out of their last six games, including four consecutive contests. UVA looks to bounce back to its winning ways, as Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 when the Cavaliers face Cal Poly-SLO at 9:00 a.m. before facing UC-Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m. UVA will compete in day three of the tournament on Feb. 27th by playing Cal Poly-SLO (9:00 a.m.) and Texas A&M (11:00 a.m.) on Sunday, Feb. 28th.
