FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Virginia softball team completed the Cal State Fullerton Tournament in winning fashion. On Saturday, Virginia dropped a 4-0 decision to Long Beach State before falling to Stanford in eight innings 2-1. On Sunday, Cal State Fullerton defeated Virginia 2-0, before UVa bounced backed and defeated San Diego State 4-2 in the nightcap.

In game one on Saturday, Stacey Zagol took the mound for the Cavaliers. She gave up seven hits and walked three batters to go along with one strikeout. The Virginia offense was stifled by the pitching of Long Beach State’s Traci Hensel. She threw a complete game no-hitter that shutdown the Cavalier bats.

In game two on Saturday, Cory Bolkan made her first start of the season on the mound for UVa. She pitched 5 innings, scattering five hits. She was replaced by Zagol in the sixth inning. Virginia got the bats around in the nightcap against Stanford, but fell short in extra innings. Stacy Holmes (1-3, 1 RBI), Meaghan Young (1-3, 1 run), Jen Krill (1-3), Lori Reese (1-3) and Karen Breshears (1-4) each singled in the loss.

On Sunday, Virginia squared off against Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State for the second time in the tournament. In game one, Bolkan pitched just under five innings, scattering four hits while striking out two batters. Christina Quinn replaced Bolkan in the fifth, allowing only two hits to go along with her two strikeouts. Young (1-3) recorded a double, while Holmes (1-3), Krill (1-3) and Reese (1-2) each singled in the loss. UVa finished 0-2 against host Cal State Fullerton in the tournament.

In Virginia’s final game of the tournament, the Cavaliers bounced back to defeat San Diego State for the second time thanks to a good all-around team performance. Quinn pitched a complete game, striking out four batters while allowing only two hits. At the plate, Virginia was lead by Reese (2-4, 2 RBI, double). Teammates Young (1-4, 1 RBI, 1 run), Breshears (1-3, 1 run) and Holmes (1-3) all added singles for UVa. Corinne Good and Sadira Furlow each scored a run for Virginia in the victory.

With the completion of the tournament, Virginia’s record stands at (5-7) overall. The Cavaliers will return home to face UMBC on Wednesday, (Mar. 4) in a doubleheader at The Park. Admission is free.
