Softball Falls to UC-Santa Barbara, 3-2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Virginia softball team headed West to play the first of its three games with the University of California at Santa Barbara Gauchos at the Campus Diamond. Virginia fell to UC-Santa Barbara in the first ever meeting between the two schools by the score of 3-2.
Once again the Cavaliers jumped out early on their opponent, as UVa took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Jen Krill (1-3, two RBI) doubled and scored Mariruth Graham and Claudia Hickey. UCSB would rally from the 2-0 deficit with a run of its own in the third inning when Mandy Edwards hit a two-run homerun to knot the score at 2-2. Kendra Wood hit a double to score Katie Ziegler to give the Gauchos a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish. Abby Murphy kept Virginia at bay by scattering three hits over five and two-thirds innings to seals the win for UC-Santa Barbara.
Virginia managed to record five hits in the loss as Julie Amaon (1-3), Kristen Dennis (1-3, double), Graham (1-2) and Meaghan Young (1-4) joined Krill in posting hits. Stacey Zagol pitched a complete game for UVa in the 3-2 loss. She allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out four batters.
The Cavaliers have outscored their opponents 15-0 through seven games after the first two innings, and have been outscored 30-20 after the second inning, including 11-2 after the fourth inning of play.
The loss drops Virginia’s record to 4-3 overall, while the win improves UC-Santa Barbara’s record to 6-5 on the season.
Virginia will remain in Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the 1999 UCSB Easton Invitational Tournament which is scheduled for Feb. 26-28. The tournament will be hosted by UCSB and will be played at the Campus Diamond. Virginia is scheduled to play Texas A&M (9:00 a.m.) and UC-Santa Barbara (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 26th, Cal Poly-Slo (9:00 a.m.) and UC-Santa Barbara (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 27th and Cal Poly-Slo (9:00 a.m.) and Texas A&M (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 28th.
