ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Virginia softball won six consecutive games in the Ringor/Winthrop Invitational before dropping the championship match to Louisiana State by a score of 8-2. The Cavaliers defeated Wichita State (2-0), UNC-Wilmington (13-1), Dayton (6-1), Princeton (2-1), Providence (4-2) and Kent State (1-0) before falling to LSU.

Karen Breshears (3B), Chrisy Quinn (P) and Stacey Zagol (P) were selected to the All-Tournament Team from Virginia. LSU’s April Jantzen was named Most Valuable Player, and Brandi Landry was named Most Valuable Pitcher.

Quinn took the mound for Virginia against Princeton and recorded 10 strikeouts while scattering three hits. Breshears (2-3, double, run) led UVa at the plate. Lori Reese (1-2, double) and Beth Crimi (1-3) added hits in the win.

Quinn pitched for the Cavaliers against Providence and recorded seven strikeouts and allowed four hits. Virginia gathered nine hits in the game, highlighted by Breshears (2-3, 2 runs) and Meaghan Young (2-4, 1 RBI, double). Amy Peay (1-3, 1 RBI), Stacy Holmes (1-3), Crimi (1-3), Reese (1-3, run) and Quinn (1-2) collected hits in the victory.

Zagol started on the mound against Kent State. She posted eight strikeouts after spreading five hits during her outing. Virginia managed only two hits in the game, (Breshears (1-2, 1 RBI) and Young (1-3), but that would be all the Cavaliers would need to pull out the win.

Cory Bolkan took the mound for Virginia in the championship game against LSU. She allowed two hits before Zagol replaced her in the second inning. Zagol pitched three innings, striking out two batters and allowing four hits and was replaced by Quinn in the fifth inning. Quinn collected two strikeouts in relief. Virginia recorded nine hits in the game, led by Breshears (2-3, 1 RBI, run), Peay (2-3, run) and Reese (2-3, double) but managed only two runs. Kelly McCabe (1-3), Young (1-3) and Holmes (1-4) added hits in the loss.

Virginia’s record stands at (19-15) overall. The Cavaliers will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face the Liberty Flames (11-9) in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
