FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Virginia softball team continued its early season pattern, defeating San Diego State in the first game 2-1 before dropping the second game to San Jose State 6-0. The Cavaliers have played four doubleheaders this season, winning all of the first games and dropping each of the second games in the series.

In game one, Stacey Zagol continued her outstanding pitching, throwing a one-hitter while striking out five batters and allowing only one walk. Beth Crimi (3-4) paced Virginia at the plate, posting three singles on the afternoon. Jen Krill (2-3) and Stacy Holmes (2-4, 1 RBI) each added two singles for the Cavaliers. Meaghan Young (1-4, triple) and Corinne Good (1-4, 1 RBI) each scored a run in UVa’s win.

In game two, Christine Quinn took the mound for the Cavaliers to start things off, scattering four hits while striking out two batters and allowing four walks. Zagol replaced Quinn in the fourth inning. She recorded three strikeouts, gave up two hits and allowed one walk. On the offensive side, Virginia could only gather three hits on the evening. Karen Breshears (1-3), Krill (1-3) and Young (1-3) posted singles for UVa in the loss.

The split on the day moves Virginia’s record to (4-4) overall. The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, (Feb. 28) to face Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon game and Stanford at 7:00 p.m. in the nightcap.
