CHARLOTTESVILLE, W.Va. – The University of Virginia softball team lost their first home game of the season by a score of 5-4, but bounced back to win game two by a 7-3 count against East Carolina in a doubleheader at The Park.

Chrisy Quinn took the mound for the Cavaliers in game one, striking out seven batter through five innings. With Virginia leading 2-1, the Pirates got hot in the fourth inning and scored four of their five runs during the stretch. Quinn was replaced by Stacey Zagol in the sixth inning. Zagol pitched two shutout innings and gathering two strikeouts. Trailing 5-2in the seventh inning, UVa made a late run at the Pirates, scoring two runs but were unable to drive in the tying run on second. The loss was Virginia’s first at home this season.

Meaghan Young (3-3, 1 RBI, triple, double, single) highlighted Virginia in game one.

In game two, the Cavaliers jumped on the Pirates early, pulling out to a 4-0 lead after five. Cory Bolkan kept the ECU hitters in check throughout most of the game, striking out five batters through seven innings of work. The Pirates scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to make the score4-3, before UVa scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the game.

The Cavaliers will travel to Louisiana to play eight games, starting with a doubleheader against Louisiana State on March 9th. Virginia will also play Soutwest Louisiana (Mar. 10), Northeast Louisiana (Mar. 12) and Louisiana Tech (Mar. 13) in doubleheaders before returning home to host Radford on Wednesday, (Mar. 18) at 2:00 p.m.
