RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team defeated Liberty 3-0 and East Carolina 9-0 to win the 1998 Sports Plus Collegiate Classic Tournament.

Chrisy Quinn pitched game-one against Liberty and recorded eight strikeouts while allowing only two hits on the afternoon. The Cavaliers gathered 11 hits in the game, highlighted by Stacy Holmes (3-4, 1 RBI, run) and Meaghan Young (2-3, run). Beth Crimi (2-4, 1 RBI), Corinne Good (2-3), Kelly McCabe (1-3, run) and Karen Breshears (1-4, 1 RBI) each contributed in the victory to send UVa into the championship game with East Carolina.

Stacey Zagol started on the mound against ECU and was spectacular. She threw a no-hitter, striking out eight batters. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Good made a diving catch to seal Zagol’s no-hitter. Virginia posted seven hits in the game, led by Holmes (2-2, 4 RBI, double, run). Lori Reese (1-2, 2 RBI), Crimi (1-1, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Amy Peay (1-2, run), Young (1-1, 2 runs) and Mariruth Graham (1 RBI) helped guide Virginia to the tournament crown.

Stacy Holmes was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Teammates Cory Bolkan, Stacey Zagol and Lori Reese were selected to the All-Tournament team.

The wins improve Virginia’s record to (26-17) overall. The Cavaliers will travel to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Sunday, (Mar. 29) and then will head to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech on Tuesday, (Mar 31).
