Swim Teams Cruise to Victory Over Virginia Tech

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18 Virginia had little trouble disposing of Virginia Tech here Sunday in men’s and women’s swimming and diving competition. The men knocked off the Hokies 166-77, while the women eased to a 162-79 victory. UVa’s men’s team is now 2-1 on the year and the women remain undefeated at 2-0.

The closest the Hokies came to winning a swimming event was in the men’s 50-yard freestyle. Shamek Pietucha captured first with a time of 21.52 seconds. Tech’s Ray Hrabe finished third, but posted a time of 21.67 seconds.

The only other races in which a Tech swimmer finished within a second was the men’s 100-yard freestyle and the women’s 100-yard backstroke. Virginia’s Art Staddon posted a time of 47.20 seconds for the victory in the men’s event, while Hokie Ray Hrabe finished second with a time of 47.57 seconds. Cavalier Meg McCubbins won the women’s event with a time of 59.36 seconds and Tech’s Lindsey Tew was right on her heels with a time of 59.59 seconds.

Virginia finished 1-2 in both the men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle relay. However, UVa did not accept the points, swimming the race as an exhibition.

In diving, Andy Cunningham finished first in both the one-meter and the three-meter on the men’s side. Tech’s only victory of the meet came in the women’s three-meter, where Jackie Davoud edged out Ashley Smith. Virginia’s Danika Wizniuk captured the three-meter title. UVa will return to competition Friday at Pittsburgh. Competition will begin at 4 p.m.
