CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teamsopened their 1998-99 seasons Saturday (Oct. 31) with victories over Clemson University at UVa’s Aquaticand Fitness Center. The Virginia men won 151-92, while the UVa women won the last two events to comefrom behind and defeat Clemson 130-113.

The Cavaliers won 10 of 13 events in the men’s competitionand had three double winners.

Junior Austin Ramirez won both the 1000 freestyle (9:12.00) and the500 freestyle (4:29.70), junior Doak Finch won both the 200 individual medley (1:51.37) and the 200backstroke (1:49.32), and sophomore Andy Cunningham won both the one-meter (271.80) and thethree-meter (297.00) diving competition. Finch was also a member of Virginia’s victorious 400 medleyrelay team.

Sophomore Razvan Petcu won both the 50 freestyle (20.31) and the 100 freestyle (45.08)for Clemson.

The Virginia women trailed 104-103 with two events remaining, but UVa freshman DanicaWizniuk won the 200 breaststroke (2:16.42) with teammate Lindsey Schubert finishing second (2:19.29). The Cavaliers’ 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Megan Roesch, junior Emily Trakas, junior RebeccaCronk and junior Meg McCubbins then won with a time of 3:24.71 to end the meet.

The Virginia womenhad two double winners in the meet. Junior Rebecca Cronk of Charlottesville won both the 50 freestyle(23.24) and the 100 freestyle (51.29), and sophomore Courtney Colbert won both the one-meter (251.55)and the three-meter diving competition.

Clemson junior Erin Schatz won both the 1000 frestyle(10:01.62) and the 500 freestyle (4:54.69) in the women’s competition.

The Virginia men and womenwere both ranked 18th in the nation in the preseason Top 25 poll, while the Clemson women were ranked ina tie for 25th. The UVa men compete at Tennessee on Friday (Nov. 6), and both the men’s and women’sswimming and diving teams compete against Virginia Tech at Virginia’s Aquatic and Fitness Center onNovember 8. The Virginia Tech meet on November 8 is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
