PITTSBURGH – Virginia picked up its first road win of the 1998-99 season here Saturday as both the men’s and women’s teams knocked off Pittsburgh in swimming and diving competition. The men withstood a late Pitt surge for a 131.5-111.5 victory, while the women coasted to a 133-104 triumph.

UVa is now 3-1 on the season in men’s competition and a perfect 3-0 on the women’s side.

Virginia held a 118.5-69.5 advantage with three events remaining in men’s competition. However, the Panthers outscored UVa 15-4, 14-5 and 13-4 in the culminating events to close the gap. Still, it was the Cavaliers’ domination early that paved the way to victory. The Wahoos captured 66 of the first 93 points after taking first in each of the initial five events.

On the women’s side, the Cavaliers took a 15-2 advantage after placing first and second in the 400 medley relay and never looked back. UVa placed first in seven of 13 events and raced the 400 freestyle relay as an exhibition.

Virginia will return to action Friday as the Cavaliers travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the first of two meets hosted by the University of Nebraska. Florida Atlantic, Kenyon, Harvard, UCLA and Arizona State will join the Cavs in Lincoln.
