DURHAM, N.C. – N.C. State (38-20) used an outstanding pitching performance from starter Kurt Blackmon to cruise past Virginia, 4-1 in the 1998 ACC Baseball Tournament. Blackmon (10-5) scattered six hits and five walks through nine innings. He gave up one unearned run.

Virginia’s starter Javier Lopez pitched six and one-third innings, giving up eight hits and three runs. Brad Piercy did most of the damage for the Wolfpack. Piercy went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI’s. The home run was his seventeenth on the year.

Josh Bowling led the Cavaliers with a 2-for-4 outing. Tim LaVigne, Jon Demmerer, Brian Sherlock, and Mark Rueffert also added hits.

With the loss, Virginia is eliminated from the Tournament and finishes the season with a record of 28-26-1.

N.C. State moves on to face the UNC/Duke loser on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
