Virginia Blanks George Mason in Doubleheader

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team carried a season-high seven game winning streak into its doubleheader with the George Mason Patriots at The Park. UVa, winner of 12 of its last 14 contests, shutout GMU in both games of the doubleheader by the scores of 6-0 in game one, followed by a 9-0 decision in the second contest.
In the Cavaliers first game, Virginia scored four first inning runs that proved to be all UVa would need to claim the victory. Corinne Good (run), Lori Reese (2-4, RBI, run), Kristen Dennis (1-3, run) and Karen Breshears (run) each scored a run in the first inning to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead which they would not relinquish. UVa added two insurance runs in the third inning to pull out to a 6-0 lead. Dennis went on to gathered her sixth win on the season as a pitcher, as she threw a complete game shutout after allowing only two hits to add with her four strikeouts.
Katie Zunno (2-3, run) and Erin McMorrow (2-3) bolster the Virginia offensive attack, while Gina McCabe (1-2, RBI) and Meaghan Young (1-4) added hits in the 6-0 win. Jen Krill and Amy Peay also posted an RBI. The Cavaliers were successful on six stolen base attempts, as Reese (3-3), Dennis (2-2) and McMorrow recorded all of UVas stolen bases.
Game two almost looked like a mirror-image of the first contest, as Virginia once again jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Young (3-3, three runs, double), Good (1-1, run), Reese (2-3, four RBI, double, run) and Krill (run) each scored a run to give UVa a 4-0 advantage. The Cavaliers scored a second inning run when Young doubled and scored on a Reese single to push the lead to 5-0. Virginia added another run in the third inning when Emily Wilkinson scored a run after walking and was driven in on Mariruth Grahams (1-2, two RBI) RBI single. Breshears contributed for UVa at the plate by finishing 1-2 with one RBI.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Virginia put the game away for good by scoring three runs by Young, Good (1-1) and Dennis (1-3) to give UVa a 9-0 lead. George Mason was unable to score in the top of the fifth inning, and the game was called due to the eight run mercy rule. Erin Allinder followed Dennis lead, as she threw a shutout and surrendered only four hits after striking out five Patriots batters.
With the two wins, Virginia improves to 26-20 overall, 3-3 in the ACC. UVa has now won 14 of its last 16 games, including a season-high nine consecutive contests. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, April 17 when UVa face the UNC-Charlotte 49ers at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will return to action on Sunday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m. Both contests will be played at The Park.
