CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia totaled 818.5 points to win the title in the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s swimming and diving championship for the second time in school history. Head coach Mark Bernardino’s Cavaliers, whose only previous title came in 1990, outdistanced second place North Carolina (728.5) by 90 points at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Defending-champion Clemson finished in third place with 547 points, followed by Maryland with 391 points. North Carolina State (389), Florida State (301) and Duke (172) rounded out the scoring.

Virginia had three individuals claim event titles on the last day of competition, in Lindsey Schubert, Emily Carrig and Katie Caratelli. Schubert had the most impressive showing, setting an ACC record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.85. Carrig successfully defended her title in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:01.33, while Caratelli won the three-meter springboard diving for the second year in a row with a score of 496.5 points. Caratelli was also named the ACC meet most valuable diver for the second straight season.

The Cavaliers also claimed first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.76. The team of Emily Trakas, Meghan Iffland, Rebecca Cronk and Meghan McCubbins set a new ACC record with their time of 3:20.76.

Two swimmers from second-place North Carolina won event titles for the third time this week. Chrissy Miller claimed first in the 1650-yard freestyle, an event which she also won in 1996, with a time of 16:27.16. Miller also won the ACC title in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday and the 400-yard individual medley on Friday. At the conclusion of the day Miller was named the most valuable swimmer of the meet, an honor which she also won in 1996.

The Tar Heels’ Richelle Fox was a first place finisher in the 100-yard freestyle, setting an ACC meet record with her time of 49.35. Along with the 100 free, Fox won ACC titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly this week, taking first in all three events for the second year in a row.

The only other event winner on the day was Clemson’s Jennifer Mihalik, who set an ACC record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.77
