DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C.–The University of Virginia golf team finished in 13th place on Saturday (May 16) at the 23-team NCAA East Regional Golf Tournament. Georgia Tech won the team championship with a team score of 29-under-par 835. Clemson finished second with a team score of 844. Virginia was 13th with a team score of 878.

UVa’s James Driscoll finished tied for 11th in the individual competition and qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament scheduled for May 27-30 in Albuquerque, N.M. Driscoll had rounds of 71-68-72 for a 5-under-par total of 211 in the 54-hole tournament on the Melrose Golf Course.

Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech won the individual competition with a 14-under-par total of 202. Kuchar had rounds of 64-69-69 and defeated teammate Bryce Molder (73-67-66 206) by four strokes in the individual competition.

The other members of the Virginia team participating in the tournament were Cameron Yancey (74-73-73 220), Andrea Brotto (76-72-76 224), Lewis Chitengwa (78-76-72 226) and Mike Mitchell (81-77-73 231).

The top 11 teams and two individuals advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Driscoll and Michael Connell of Mississippi State are the two individuals advancing to the NCAA Tournament in Albuquerque.
