CHARLOTTESVILLE — The University of Virginia has announced a four-year contract with Richmond radio station WRVA (AM 1140). The agreement with the 50,000-watt clear channel station calls for WRVA to carry all University of Virginia football and men’s basketball games, including the 30 minute pre-game and post-game shows. Radio station WRNL (AM 910) in Richmond, a sister station of WRVA, will carry 10 Virginia women’s basketball games as part of the agreement which runs through the 2001-2002 athletic year.

In addition, WRVA will be the originating affiliate for the weekly Cavalier Call-In show featuring host Chuck Noe with Virginia head football coach George Welsh and men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen.

“We are delighted to be associated with the University of Virginia for the next four years,” said WRVA and Virginia Radio Network (VRN) General Manager Carl McNeill. “We have had a long relationship with UVa and this contract will allow us the opportunity to continue our partnership into the 21st century.”

WRVA and the Virginia Radio Network will also assist UVa in developing a network of radio affiliates to provide statewide coverage of Virginia football and men’s basketball.

“When I was coaching, I had parents of players from Kansas and Kentucky who would follow our games on WRVA,” Virginia Athletic Director Terry Holland said. “With WRVA’s strength of signal, we have positioned Virginia football and basketball for maximum exposure not only throughout the state, but across the country. Our fans, as well as families and friends of our student-athletes, will benefit from our relationship with WRVA.”
