March 30, 1998 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and Kelly McLaughlin (Scotch Plains, N.J.) were both named to the 1997 GTE Women’s University Division Academic All-District III Fall/Winter Second Team.

Vizzuso, a member of the United States National Field Hockey Team, is currently in training with the team in Australia in preparation for the 1998 World Cup. An English major, Vissuso holds the records for assists in a season with her 21 notched in 1997 as Virginia advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in school history. She has 35 career assists, which ranks third all-time at UVa. For the second consecutive season, Vizzuso has recorded double digits in goals and assists. She was the first Cavalier in school history to perform this feat last year. Her 45 points is second on the team this year and is the sixth-highest total in a season in school history.

McLaughlin, a senior defender who was a biology/pre-med major, was named to the All-State team for the second consecutive year in 1997. The Cavaliers, who participated in the NCAA Tournament each of McLaughlin’s four years, advanced to the second round in 1997. McLaughlin, who graduated in 1997, played her final season as a graduate student and helped Virginia record a 1.18 goals-against average for the season.
