CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team defeated the East Carolina Pirates by a score of 6-1 at The Park. The Cavaliers built an early lead and never looked back, as they cruised to the win.

Stacey Zagol took the mound for Virginia, holding the East Carolina squad scoreless through six innings. She collected nine strikeouts and allowed only one run on three hits. Virginia had the bats moving, gathering 10 hits on the day, led by Stacy Holmes (2-3, 3 RBI, double, run). Lori Reese (2-3, 1 RBI, triple, run) and Corinne Good (2-3, triple, run) came up big for UVa in the win. Beth Crimi (1-2, 1 RBI), Jen Krill (1-3, 1 RBI) and Gina McCabe (1-1) each added hits for Virginia.

East Carolina tried to make a late run in the seventh inning. The Pirates collected two of their three hits and scored their only run before dropping the game.

With the win, Virginia’s record improves to (8-7) overall, (3-0) at The Park. The loss drops the Pirates to (6-9) overall. The Cavaliers return to home action on Saturday, (Mar. 7) when they hosts East Carolina in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at The Park.
