Virginia Volleyball Defeats Wake Forest

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team played its seventh five-game match in its last nine contests, as the Cavaliers earned a 3-2 victory over visiting Wake Forest in front of 288 spectators at Memorial Gymnasium.

Virginia opened the match with a 15-9 decision in the first game, before the Demon Deacons regrouped to steal the second game 15-11 and captured the third game 15-13. Trailing 2-1 for the second time in as many days, UVa rallied to win game four 15-9 before claiming the match in the fifth game by the score of 15-13.

Virginia had three players finish with double figures in kills. Jessica Parsons (match-high 23 kills, 12 digs, five blocks), Claire Folga (20 digs, 16 kills) and Deanna Zwarich (13 kills) provided the punch up front for UVa, while setter Mary Frances Scott dished-out a match-high 62 assists to go along with 12 digs and seven kills. Katie Jones recorded a team-high 21 digs to add with nine kills, while the duo of Amanda Wells and Kristi Winters gathered 17 and 10 digs, respectively. Virginia’s three fourth-year players: Tamara Shulman (8 kills, 2 digs, 2 assists), Folga and Wells played their last home match for UVa and were instrumental in the Cavaliers 3-2 win.

Wake Forest was highlighted by Trina Maso de Mayo, who posted match-highs with 30 digs and four service aces to go along with a team-high 18 kills. Setter Julie Cowley chalked-up 60 assists and 15 digs and teammate Katie Horne collected 18 kills and 16 digs in the loss.

With the win, Virginia improves to 25-6 overall, 12-4 in the ACC. The loss drops Wake Forest’s record to 21-11 overall, 7-9 in the conference. With UVa’s 25 victories, the 1998 Cavaliers have become the winningest volleyball team at Virginia in the 1990’s by topping the 24 wins recorded by the 1996 squad.

The Cavaliers, picked to finish seventh in the pre-season coaches poll, finish second in the ACC with a record of 12-4. UVa has defeated every team in the conference at least once this season. Virginia will compete in the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at College Park, Md. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (Nov. 20) at 4:30 p.m. when Virginia faces the winner of the Duke vs. Maryland match, which will be played on Thursday, (Nov 19).
