Women's Lacrosse Defeats UMBC

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team used a 13-0 run spanning both halves to defeat UMBC today 18-3 in Charlotttesville. The vaunted Cavalier defense held the Retrievers scoreless for 43:47 in the middle of the game to help the Cavaliers remain undefeated. Virginia’s Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) scored all five of her points during that critical 13-0 run.

The Cavaliers got on the board in the first minute of play as Jess Hull (Arlington, Va./Broadneck) ran to the cage 49 seconds into the contest. The Retrivers tied up the game four minutes later as Debbie Krastel connected on a free position. But the Cavalier defense, led by captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country)’s six ground balls, shut down the UMBC offense ttake control of the game.

Virginia captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) put the Cavaliers up for good with an unassted goal at the 18:11 mark. Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley), the ACC Player of the Week, took a Boutilier pass to the cage for Virginia’s next goal three minutes later. Ariza scored the second of her game-high goals on a free position at the 12:15 mark, and Hull scored her second goal 15 seconds later on a pass from Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) to put the Cavaliers up 5-1.

Mooney was in on the last four goals of the half as she assisted Hull on the next goal with just under ten minutes to go. She hooked up with Potter twice for the next two Cavalier scores, and she fed Joanna Khouri (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) for the final goal of the half with 10 seconds to go as Virginia took a 9-1 lead at halftime.

Hull scored the opening goal of the second half the same way she started in the first half . Potter’s crease dodge with three minutes gone by in the second half gave Virginia an 11-1 lead. Ariza and Mooney hit free positions at the 25:56 and 20:26 marks to stake Virginia to a 13-1 lead, and Khouri scored her second goal with one of Meredith Elwell’s (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) two assists on the day at the hafway point of the period.

UMBC’s Jessaka Phoebus scored from 30 yards out on a missed pass to break up the Virginia momentum with 11:30 to go, and Krastel connected on her second free position to give the Retrievers a mini-rally, but the Cavaliers closed the door with the final four goals in the last four minutes, behind two goals from Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Beo take control of the game.

Virginia captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) put the Cavaliers up for good with one from Khouri, and one from Natalie Soule (Yarmouth, Me./Yarmouth), who scored her first goal as a Cavalier today.

Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by Boutilier’s six ground balls. Ariza led with three caused turnovers, while Taylor and Potter picked up three draw controls to lead the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday as they face the sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins in College Park. Game time is 3:00 pm. The Cavaliers have not defeated the Terrapins since March 23, 1993.
