CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Maryland’s Kristin Sommar and Jen Adams each recorded a hat trick as the Terrapins defeated the third-ranked Cavaliers 13-3 tonight at University Hall Turf Field.

Maryland scored first as Alison Comito made a charge from the left seven minutes into the contest. The Cavaliers tied the score five minutes later after a patient attack on a Samm Taylor (Springfield, VA/Robinson) charge from the restraining line. The Terrapins answered quickly as Quinn Carney took a crease feed from Comito two minutes later.

The Terrapins then scored three goals in an eighty-second span to break open the game as Carney, Courtney Hobbs, and Jen Adams each scored. Virginia’s Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) cut into the lead with an unassisted goal at the 5:13 mark. After Virginia’s Francis Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./Glen Mills) made a save on the next Terrapin possession, the Cavaliers looked to possess the ball for the final shot.

Mia Mooney (Rosemont, Pa./Shipley)’s shot was saved by Alex Kahoe and the Terrapins moved the ball downfield in ten seconds where Sommar scored with two seconds on the clock to send the teams to halftime with Maryland up 6-2.

In the second half, the Terrapins took control of the game, pressuring the Cavaliers to break half of their clears, scoring five goals in the first 15 minutes to stake an 11-2 lead. Virginia’s Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) stopped the run with an unassisted goal at 2:43, but the Terrapins scored twice in the final two minutes for the final score of 13-3.

With the loss, the Cavaliers drop to 3-1 on the season. They will face #7 Princeton on Friday night at 7:00 pm at the Turf Field.
