Women's Lacrosse Routs Richmond

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The fifth-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team held the Richmond Spiders scoreless in the first half and cruised to a 14-1 win today in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers were led by a pair of freshmen in Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) and Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Hook had five points, including a career-high four assists, and Aumiller scored a career-high four goals. The defense, led by Meredith Elwell’s (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) seven ground balls and Samm Taylor’s (Springfield, Va./Robinson) three caused turnovers and career-high seven draw controls, only let the Spiders cross the midfield line three times in the first half.

The Cavaliers jumped on top with a seven-goal barrage in the first eight minutes of play, as Aumiller, who had her first career start this afternoon, had a pair of goals. She was playing for the injured Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley). Hook added a goal and three assists. The Cavalier defense stood strong, as the Spiders were held to 3-12 clearing in the first half and two shots. Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) both had three gorund balls and Ariza added two caused turnovers in helping the Cavaliers control the ball for the majority of the first half. Furthermore, all of Taylor’s seven draw controls came in the first half as the Cavaliers built a 10-0 lead at halftime when Elwell scored her first goal of the season with 12:53 remaining in the first half.

Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) scored her second goal of the game two minutes into the second half and Fromal added an unassisted goal to push the margin to a dozen before the Spiders got on the board. Kelly Clark converted the Spider’s only free position attempt of the day to stop the drought.

Aumiller scored the final two goals of the game as she converted a Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s Belfield) pass with 10:30 to go and then scored an unassisted goal with 34 seconds remaining for the final score of 14-1.

Clair Parrish (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) had her first career start in goal today and recorded no saves against three shots while allowing one goal during the whole 60 minutes. She had four ground ball pickups as Hook also picked up six ground balls.

The Cavaliers travel to second-ranked Princeton on Friday, April 3. The game against the Tigers is set for 7:00 pm. Virginia will remain in the Philadelphia area to play Villanova on Saturday at Villanova. Game time against the Wildcats is 3:00 pm.
