Women's Lacrosse Tops James Madison

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The third-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team used another career day by senior captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country) to defeat the sixth-ranked James Madison Dukes 16-8 today in Charlottesville. Boutilier equalled her career high with five goals and added a game-high six ground balls to help the Cavaliers win their fifteenth consecutive game against in-state opponents.

Boutilier started the scoring for the Cavaliers with a conversion of a free position less than two minutes into the game. Mills Hook (Luther-ville, Md./St. Paul’s) added a second free position goal eight minutes later to put Virginia up 2-0. Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) forced the Dukes to take a timeout when she put a Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) pass in the back of the cage at the 18:12 mark. Boutilier, however, scored the next goal after the time out with a second 8-meter goal at the 16:40 mark.

The Cavalier defense, led by four first-half saves from senior Heather Castle (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep), kept the Dukes from scoring for the first 18 minutes of the game.

The Dukes got on the board with a free position goal of their own with just over 12 minutes to go in the first half as Michelle Zurfluh scored her first career goal. The Cavaliers answered as Ariza assisted a second time, this time to freshman Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) with 8:30 to go in the first half. JMU’s Julie Martinez converted another 8-meter mark to cut the deficit to 5-2 three minutes later. The Dukes’ Megan Riley then got hot, scoring the first of her four goals with just under two minutes to go in the first half. Virginia’s Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley), however, kept her 11-game scoring streak active with a goal from Elwell with just over a minute to play in the half.

Boutilier started the second half with the first two goals five minutes into the stanza on dodges from the top of the arc. Hook’s quickstick goal from Mooney gave the Cavaliers a six-goal lead with 21:32 remaining in the half.

JMU’s Riley then asserted herself and helped the Dukes score twice in less than a minute as JMU won the ensuing draw and Riley scored. Riley then assisted Jenn Ball 55 seconds later to cut the deficit to 9-5 with 20 minutes to go. But the Hoos countered with two goals of their own, one each from Ariza and Hook.

Riley responded for the Dukes by scoring an unassisted goal, but the Cavaliers scored two in a minute to increase the margin to 13-6 with 10 minutes to go when Boutilier scored her fifth goal of the game with an assist from Ariza. Riley would try to close the gap with her fourth goal coming from an assist by Julie Wiess with 7:24 to go in the game. Virginia closed the door with three goals, one each by Ariza, Mooney, and Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) to push the margin to 16-7. Zurfluh’s second goal with an assist from Jamie Pleyo with 17 seconds left accounted for the final score of 16-8.

Castle finished with 7 saves on the day, while Boutilier, Ariza, and Melissa Hayes (Chevy Chase, Md.,/Georgetown Visitation) scooped up six gorund balls. Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) led Virginia with four caused turnovers while Boutilier and Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) each contributed three caused turnovers.

The Cavaliers travel to Durham to face ACC foe Duke on Friday. Game time against the Blue Devils is 3:00 pm.
