CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The third-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team opened up its 1998 season tonight with a 13-1 defeat of Old Dominion. The Cavalier captains, Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley), Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country) and Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) scored 10 goals and chipped in 5 assists to lead the Cavalier attack. Virginia won its ninth consecutive opening game.

Virginia jumped out to an early lead as Potter picked up a ground ball behind the cage and fed Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) who was standing on the crease just two minutes into the contest. Ariza and Boutilier each scored unassisted goals four minutes apart to put the Cavaliers up 3-0 after 10 minutes. Ariza’s second goal five minutes later forced the Monarchs to take a time out with the score at 4-0.

Virginia’s Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) converted a free position at the 11:28 mark to put the Cavaliers up 5-0. Virginia then used a pair of quick strikes to increase their lead. Ariza took a Boutilier pass to the cage with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half to put Virginia up 6-0, and Mills Hook (Luther-ville, Md./St. Paul’s) scored her first collegiate goal 18 seconds later on a fast break off the draw from Potter.

ODU’s Carly Brown stopped the Virginia attack with a free position goal with just under five minutes remaining in the first half to put the Monarchs on the board, but it would turn out to be the last goal for ODU.

Potter then scored twice in 14 seconds as she converted a Boutilier assist with 1:43 on the clock and then scored off a free position with 1:29 remaining to stake Virginia to a 9-1 lead at halftime.

Boutilier scored off a challenge five minutes into the second half to put the Cavaliers in double digits, and Potter increased the lead to double digits with a converted challenge three minutes later. The two captains hooked up again three minutes later as Boutilier scored from Potter with 18:34 to go. Potter closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 7:22 remaining.

Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by goalie Heather Castle (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who made five saves on the evening. Three Cavaliers–Melissa Hayes (Chevy Chase, Md.,/Georgetown Visitation), Boutilier, and Stephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md/Annapolis) each picked up five ground balls while Samaras, Ariza, and Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) led Virginia with three caused turnovers each. It was the 15th time in school history that the Cavaliers have held an opponent to one goal and the first time since 1996.

The Cavaliers travel to Washington, DC to face the tenth-ranked Hoyas of Georgetown on Saturday. Game time is 2:00 pm. Virginia returns home on Monday, March 16 to face the Retreivers of UMBC at 4:00 pm.
