KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Virginia freshmen Darci Borski (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) and Laura Gaworecki (Houston, TX/Cypress Creek) teamed up with just under three minutes to go in the game to get what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers as they defeated host Tennessee 4-3 in the Lady Vol Soccer Classic late tonight in Knoxville. The Cavaliers battled back from a 3-2 deficit to score the last two goals of the game–both assisted by Gaworecki–for the win.
Virginia career goals-leader Angela Hucles (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored her first goal of the night just five minutes into the game to send the Cavaliers to the early lead. The Lady Vols battled back with a goal in the 18th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Virginia took the lead a second time as sophomore Katie Tracy (Richmond, VA/James River) took a through ball from Borski to the cage 32 minutes into the match to give the Cavaliers the 2-1 lead, but the Lady Vols tied it up just before halftime with a goal by freshman Allison Campbell.
Tennessee took the lead 13 minutes into the second stanza as the Volunteers punched back a rebound into the cage. The Cavaliers tied it up themselves as Hucles scored her second goal of the evening off a corner kick service from Gaworecki in the 74th minute of play. Borski and Gaworecki connected in the 88th minute as Borski banged in the Gaworecki cross.
The Cavaliers outshot the Volunteers 22-11, but Tennessee keeper Ellen Dean made eight saves as she went down to her first defeat of the year.
Virginia will face its second consecutive SEC opponent in the final day of the Lady Vol Soccer Classic as the Cavaliers meet the Commodores of Vanderbilt on Sunday, Oct. 4. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 pm CST.
