Women's Soccer Falls to Georgia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– After battling to a 2-2 tie through 150 minutes of soccer with the completion of four overtime periods, the University of Georgia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament past the Virginia Cavaliers with a 3-1 advantage in penalty kicks today at Klockner Stadium. The Bulldogs advance to the third round of the NCAA tournament where they will travel to Dartmouth.
Georgia goalie Nicole Williams stopped Virginia’s first shooter, Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike). Georgia senior Jennifer Ahern then connected on the Bulldogs’ first shot. Williams also stopped Virginia’s Katie Tracy (Richmond, Va./James River). Bulldogs sophomore Stefanie Bertcher shot the ball past Virginia goalie Megan Boehm to put Georgia up 2-0. Cavaliers junior Angela Hucles (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored to make the score 2-1. But Georgia junior Danielle Jordan answered back to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Virginia freshman Darci Borski’s (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) shot hit the crossbar, which gave Georgia the 3-1 advantage in penalty kicks. Virginia began the scoring eight minutes into the game, when Hucles sent a pass to Borski in the penalty box. Borski dribbled past a defender and sent a shot over the outstretched hands of Williams to make the score 1-0.
The Bulldogs evened the score seven minutes later in the 14th minute, when Ahern sent a cross from the right side of the field into the penalty box. Senior Sue Weathersbee ran onto the ball and shot it into the lower right corner of the goal, past Virginia goalkeeper Megan Boehm (Columbia, Md./Howard).
At the 25 minute mark, there was a scramble in front of the Georgia goal. Williams and Hucles were fighting for the ball when Williams wrapped her arms around Hucles’ legs. The referees awarded a penalty kick to Virginia. Lindsey connected on the shot which gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs tied the game just 11 minutes into the second half after a Cavalier error. Boehm kicked a short punt to Georgia forward Nikki Ornelaz right outside the penalty box. Boehm came off her line and Ornelaz sent the ball past Boehm to tie the score 2-2. With nine minutes remaining in the game, Virginia defender Breanne Smith (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) made a critical defensive save. Georgia senior Mandy Aiken took a shot on an open Virginia goal, but Smith kicked the ball off the goal line to preserve the 2-2 score, where it remained for the duration.
Virginia had 17 shots and 10 corner kicks while Georgia had 18 shots and 6 corner kicks. Boehm made 10 saves while Williams made 7. Virginia ends it season with a 13-6-3 record. The Cavaliers lost to William & Mary 1-0 last year in second round of the NCAA Tournament.
