VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – No. 5 Virginia had several opportunities to take a victory away from the Virginia Beach SportsPlex here Tuesday night, most of them coming in the two overtime periods. However, after 120 minutes of play, the Cavaliers and William & Mary found themselves right where they were at the beginning of the match: deadlocked in a 0-0 tie.
UVa now stands at 12-2-3 on the season with one regular-season contest remaining. William & Mary, which has seen five games go to double-overtime this fall, now stands at 10-6-2. The Cavaliers managed just three shots in the opening period, but it was a shot three minutes into the game that gave the Wahoos their first and possibly best chance of the game. Marshall Leonard blasted a shot from 30 yards out on the left side and only a leaping punch by Tribe keeper Anndrew Pillari kept the game scoreless.
For the match, UVa out-shot William & Mary 18-11. The Cavaliers had three shots in the first overtime and five shots in the second. Virginia again had great chances late in the game. A downfield pass by Matt Chulis found Steve Totten all alone with the keeper, but the latter could not get a shot off.
Then, with about 15 seconds remaining in the second extra period, Sheldon Barnes had a shot miss by about six inches on the right post. However, it was all to no avail as the Cavaliers played their first scoreless tie since Sept. 13, 1997 at Maryland.
Virginia will wrap up its regular season at home Saturday at 2 p.m. against Ohio State. UVa’s four seniors will be honored prior to the match at Klckner Stadium.
