CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Cavaliers came back from one-goal deficits twice tonight as they defeated the seventh-ranked Northeastern Huskies 5-3 tonight in Charlottesville. Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) scored twice in 49 seconds to give the Cavaliers a 4-3 and then a 5-3 lead to seal the victory.

Northeastern got on the board first as Hilary McHugh connected on a penalty corner with just five minutes passed in the game. She was assisted on the play by Heidi Benson and Holly Holmberg. The Cavaliers answered three minutes later as Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) stuck in a Meridith Thorpe (St. Louis, Mo/John Burroughs) pass right in front of the cage to tie the score at 1-1.

The Cavaliers went ahead with 4:37 remaining in the first half as Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) converted a penalty stroke. But Northeastern tied the game with 1:49 remaining in the half as Benson dribbled down field and stuck a shot past the Cavalier keeper Ellen Wiese (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock). The teams went into halftime tied 2-2.

The Huskies went up a second time as Benson scored on a scramble in front of the cage with just over five minutes gone in the second half. The Cavaliers tied the game at 3-3 as Elwell took a touch pass from Lori Mastropietro (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock), who had received a ball from Michelle Vizzuso. The Cavaliers took the lead for good as Lorraine Vizzuso tipped in a pass from Mastropietro and her sister Michelle. Vizzuso converted her second goal of the evening as she took a long hit from Melissa Hayes (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and flipped it into the corner of the goal.

he Cavaliers defense rallied after allowing their third goal of the evening and did not allow the Huskies another shot the rest of the evening. In addition, Northeastern only took one corner on the night.

Virginia will face #16 Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 12 at home. Game time against the Minutemen is 11:00 am. The Cavaliers will turn around and face Appalachian State on Sunday at 1:00 pm, following the game pitting #9 James Madison against the Minutewomen.
