MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va.) set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle to lead the University of Virginia women’s swimming team into 18th place following the first day of the NCAA Championship. The Cavaliers totaled 15 points on the opening day of competition. Stanford stands in first place with 129 points.

Cronk placed 11th in the 50 free finals with her time of 22.85. She broke the school record in the preliminary round, when she swam a time of 22.74. Cronk was also a key part of the 200 yard freestyle relay team, which placed 12th. Freshman Meghan Iffland (Wilmington, Del.), sophomore Julie Gehm (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Meghan McCubbins (Richmond, Va.) teamed with Cronk to swim a time of 1:32.71 in the finals. The 200 free relay team also set a new school record in the preliminary round, with a time of 1:31.50.

A number of other Cavaliers also took part in the competition. In the 500 yard freestyle, sophomore Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va.) placed 22nd with a time of 4:49.89, sophomore Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla.) came in 29th in a time of 4:51.52 and sophomore Sharon Riedlinger (Laurel, Md.) was 39th with a time of 4:53.85. In the 50 free, McCubbins came in 35th (23.31), Iffland was 45th (23.57) and Gehm finished 47th (23.75).

The NCAA Championship continues tomorrow and Saturday, with preliminaries at 12:00 p.m. and finals at 8:00 p.m. each day.
