Women's Tennis Drops ACC Opener
Mar. 1, 1998
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va — The University of Virginia women’s tennis team lost its ACC opener this afternoon to Florida State 5-4 in a match played at the indoor courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 4-3 this season.
The Seminoles opened a commanding lead by winning four of six singles matches. The Cavaliers got wins from Paige Boiko at #1 and freshman Leslie Cook at #4. Boiko snapped a two-match losing streak by downing Ali Weber 7-6, 7-6. Cook won her second straight match with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 three-set victory over senior Helena Karlsson.
The deficit entering doubles play meant that Virginia would have to sweep the doubles to claim victory. The Cavaliers made the match interesting by drawing closer as Cook and Christie Schweer quickly dispatched Weber and Karlsson 8-1 at #3 doubles. Cook and Schweer, 20th in the latest rankings, raised their record to 14-3 with the win.
The Seminoles clinched the win as Nanette Duxin and Natalie Carratala came from behind to down Boiko and Kendall White 8-5 at #2. Virginia’s Emily Hill and Stacy Gingold made the final score closer by winning over Kia Asberg and Sasha Hanna 8-6 at #1.
The Cavaliers return to action on March 9 when they face Boston University during a spring break trip to Miami, Fla.
