Women's Tennis Falls to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va – Despite winning four of six singles matches, the University ofVirginia women’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Richmond Tuesday atthe UR Tennis Complex. The Cavaliers dropped to 9-4 overall this season,while the Spiders improved to 10-5 this year. The loss snapped Virginia’seight-match winning streak over the Spiders and was the first loss to themsince 1990.

Things looked bright for the Cavaliers heading into doubles play as theyled 4-2. Leslie Cook won her fifth match in a row with a 6-3, 6-2 win overAmy Croker at #4 to help lead the Cavaliers in singles. Interestingly,Croker’s brother, Tommy, plays #5 for the UVa men’s tennis team.

Kelly Weaver won for the eighth time in her last nine matches with a 7-6,6-3 win over Wesley Kohl at #6. Other winners for Virginia were Paige Boikoat #1 and Amy O’Donnell at #3.

Croker and Kohl began Richmond’s comeback with an 8-4 victory at #3 doublesover O’Donnell and Weaver. The loss ended a five-match winning streak forthe Cavalier duo. The Spiders drew even as Elizabeth Cascarilla andCatherine Hawley stopped Cook and Christie Schweer by an 8-5 count at #2.Janelle Williams and Lindsay Woodworth clinched Richmond’s victory bygaining a hardfought 9-8 win over Boiko and Stacy Gingold at #1.
