ATLANTA– The University of Virginia women’s tennis team lost to Maryland 5-1 late Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis tournament at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Georgia Tech campus.

The Cavaliers, who lost to Maryland 5-4 during the regular season, fall to 13-9 overall. Maryland, winner of four straight matches, improved to 12-9 and advanced to the semifinals for the first time since the single elimination format began in 1990.

The Terrapins closed out the victory without having to play the doubles competition. Stacy Walkowitz defeated Leslie Cook 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 at 4 to clinch the win.

Freshman Christie Schweer, the ACC runner-up at 5, was the only Cavalier to win. She defeated Chrissie Terrill 6-3, 7-6 (6) for her seventh consecutive win. She leads the Cavaliers with a 23-9 record this season.
