Women's Tennis Needs Big Comeback to Beat North Carolina, 5-4

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team dug itself a deep hole this afternoon before turning in a rousing comeback to defeat North Carolina 5-4 at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. With the win the Cavaliers improve to 9-4 overall (1-1 in the ACC). The Tar Heels fall 4-11 overall.

Paige Boiko (#1) and Christie Schweer (#5) were the lone Cavaliers to win their singles matches as North Carolina built a 4-2 lead after singles. The Tar Heels helped themselves by winning two three-set matches–Sarah Hawkins at #3 and Erin Neibling at #5.

With the deficit, Virginia was forced to win all three doubles matches to have any chance to win the match. Boiko and Kendall White helped draw Virginia closer as they easily dispatched Hawkins and Courtney Zalinski 8-3 at #2.

Virginia’s freshman tandem of Schweer and Leslie Cook rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win 9-7 over Neibling and Jeni Burnette at #3.

The Cavaliers’ #1 team of Stacy Gingold and Emily Hill were down 6-3 and fought off three match points to clinch the win for Virginia with a stirring 9-7 win over Cena Hackler and Jessica Zaganczyk.
