Women's Volleyball Claims Jefferson Cup Invitational Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team battled a determined Georgetown squad in the 1998 Jefferson Cup Invitational championship match. The Hoyas opened the match with a 15-13 decision in the first game, before the Cavaliers rallied to win the next three games (16-14, 15-9, 15-11). Both teams entered the match with a 2-0 record in the tournament.
Jessica Parsons recorded match-highs with 27 kills and eight blocks to go along with four digs. Teammate Mary Frances Scott posted a match-high 53 assists and gathered 14 digs and four kills. The trio of Katie Jones (17 digs, 13 kills), Andrea Fischer (11 kills, 6 digs) and Deanna Zwarich (11 kills, 5 digs) came up big for UVa in the win. Kristi Winters posted seven kills and five digs while Amanda Wells recorded 11 digs in UVa’s 3-1 victory.
Georgetown was led by Elisa Davidson (40 assists, 13 digs), Kiran Gill (25 kills, 13 digs) and Yulia Vtyurina (24 kills, 15 digs) in the loss.
Jessica Parson, Mary Frances Scott and Deanna Zwarich were named to the all-tournament team. Parson earned the tournament MVP. The three Cavaliers were joined by Kiran Gill (Georgetown), Vanessa Richlin (Cornell), Yulia Vtyurina (Georgetown) and Jennifer West (VCU).
Virginia finished the tournament with a record of 3-0. Georgetown took second place finishing 2-1, Cornell placed third with a 1-2 mark and VCU finished fourth going 0-3 in tournament play.
With the win, Virginia’s record improves to 11-1 overall and marks the best start to a season in the history of Virginia volleyball. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (Sept. 25) when UVa plays its first conference match of the season at Wake Forest. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
