WINNEPEG, Canada – Two University of Virginia athletes garnered medals in competition at the 1999 Pan American Games as Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) won a gold medal with the women’s soccer team and Austin Ramirez (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central) won a silver medal as part of the swim team.

Lindsey, a second year on the women’s soccer team, helped the USA take their second major competition of the summer as the US defeated Mexico 1-0 on a goal in the 25th minute. The two teams had tied 1-1 in pool play, and this time the US took a lead and made it stand up for the gold medal.

Ramirez, who was competing in the 400 freestyle, had the second-fastest qualifying time at 3:57:02 in today’s preliminaries. In the finals tonight, though, he swam more than three seconds faster, finishing in 3:53:64. Although he defeated the swimmer who had bested him in the preliminaries, Ramirez fell just short of the gold behind the Brazilian Luiz Lima, who won the gold in a time of 3:52.25. Ramirez will compete for the Cavaliers in 1999-2000 as a fourth year.
